Overview

Co-hosted by the Fall Urban Design Studio, the Hudson Valley Initiative at Columbia GSAPP, the APA Urban Design Committee, and the AIANY Urban Design Committee

(The event follows the final review of the Fall semester studio in the urban design program with focus on the Hudson Valley)

From drinking water, to fresh agricultural produce, to stone, cement, and other construction materials, the Hudson Valley provides much of the resources feeding the dense metropolitan areas of New York City and Albany. The panel will focus on planning and design of material and non-material systems of water, transportation, agriculture, waste, of goods and artifacts, that are active agents of social and economic impact – directing opportunities, shaping perceptions of communities, shaping social mobility. Questions to be discussed include:

What forms of collaboration do municipalities and counties need in order to adequately plan and design these systems? What role does New York City as the economic powerhouse in these systems play in shaping upstate infrastructure?

Speakers will present case studies of planning analysis and urban design proposals with a regional scope that reflect the multi-scalar thinking necessary when acting in a region.
