At the Crossroads
Exploring the Intersection of Planning, Preservation, & Change
In 2023, the APA Urban Design and Preservation Division partnered with the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the National Alliance of Preservation Commissions to explore the intersection of planning, preservation, and change. The initiative features joint educational webinars, in-person conference panels, and an update of APA’s historic preservation policies and advocacy positions.

APA Historic and Cultural Resources Policy Update
Our Division is working with the APA Legislative Policy Committee on opportunities to update the 1997 APA Historic and Cultural Resources Policies to more effectively advocate for preservation and planning at the federal and state levels. The update would help decision-makers consider and incorporate historic resources in a more integrative way aligned with today’s critical planning issues:
- Housing Production
- Zoning & Regulatory Reform
- Climate Change & the Environment
- Hazard Mitigation
- Economic Development
- Equity
We're looking for volunteers who have an interest in participating in this effort.
